Day 2

The hardest part of photography isn’t understanding the light, the weather, or the location. It is taking the first step out of the door.

We build things up in our heads. Fear, uncertainty and doubt creep in.  We convince ourselves it’s not worth the effort, conditions won’t be right, or that we’ll come back empty-handed. But the truth is most good photos only happen because someone was there. This is especially the case in landscape photography.

You don’t always need a plan. Just take that first step out the door and things will start to fall into place.

Once you’re out there, things change. We start to relax and notice the interesting small details. We respond to what is in front of us rather than what we hoped might be there. If you are walking or hiking, the increased circulation reaches the brain and sparks the creative fire.

Not every outing needs to produce a “hero” image. Some days are simply about exploration, a micro-adventure, connecting with nature or people, and building momentum. Those days still matter. It’s what keeps photography interesting and sustainable.

So if you’re hesitating today, this is your reminder:

Stand up, take that first step out of the door, and go and capture the photo you almost didn’t take.
